Global Voices and Macquarie University are proud to announce that Bachelor of Arts with Bachelor of Laws student Claire Bennett will be attending the Global Voices Study Tour on UN Sustainable Development and Environmental Challenges to be held in Kenya in June.
Claire joins four other young Australians who will make up the Global Voices Study Tour and will receive a fully sponsored package to attend.
Claire, 21 from Eastwood, is a Macquarie University Merit Scholar and currently in her fourth year of a Bachelor of Arts and Law, majoring in Politics and International Relations. She has a passion for social justice and development and is particularly active in the area of remote Indigenous education.
The UN Sustainable Development Tour to Nairobi will visit several United Nations institutions including the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) for briefings to learn about their programs and policies. At the time of the delegation, the first session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) will also be taking place in Nairobi. Delegates will participate in the Assembly where possible, including the preceding civil society forum. This delegation will offer delegates the unique opportunity to engage with policy formation as well as forming an understanding of the importance of these policies for local populations.

The empowerment of women in politics is a cause very close to my heart and I hope my research and recommendations will encourage Kenyan women to embrace their potential as a real driving force for policy development and reform in the country” says Claire.
Claire recently returned from preparatory activities in Canberra, where she met with Prime Minister, the Hon Tony Abbott MP; Leader of the Opposition, the Hon Bill Shorten MP; the Minister for Foreign Affairs, the Hon. Julie Bishop MP and Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Development, the Hon. Tanya Plibersek MP as well as Greens Leader Christine Milne and Shadow Minister for the Environment, the Hon Mark Butler MP.
Claire is completing a Research Fellowship with Global Voices, which will include the production of a paper on an aspect related to sustainable development to be published by Global Voices. Established in 2011, Global Voices is a non-profit organisation whose mission is to provide opportunities for young Australians to engage with international policy both at home and abroad.

Also as part of her studies at Macquarie, Claire will travel to Munich in May, to attend the Student G20 Conference as Secretary General of the Round Table for Humanities and present a research paper on the politicization of Australia’s colonial history.
The Macquarie Merit Scholars Program for high achieving students includes exclusive opportunities to take part in professional workshops, social and networking events, academic mentoring, undergraduate research scholarships and international travel scholarships. The international travel scholarships provide full funding for Merit Scholar students like Claire to attend overseas conferences, take part in international internships and other relevant development programs.
