Sydney’s Macquarie University has been placed equal 9th among the 25 most international universities in the world by the UK’s Times Higher Education.

The list is compiled using the Times’ “international outlook” indicator, which examines a university’s international student numbers, its percentage of international staff and the proportion of its research papers published with a co-author from at least one other country.

The top 25 list includes many famous names including the universities of Cambridge and Oxford, Imperial College London, National University of Singapore and the highly prestigious Nanyang Technological University.

“Most major research universities view their international standing as a vital part of their strategic plans,” the Times report states. “With powerful global networks universities can find the best academic talent, attract the brightest students and produce collaborative, innovative research that exploits the resources of multiple institutions and tackles matters of global concern.”

Macquarie’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor, International, Professor Jim Lee, says the University has an enviable international reputation.

“Macquarie is a university with a truly global perspective. We welcome thousands of international students from over 100 countries to our campus each year, we internationalise our curriculum, our exchange program is among the most extensive in Australia, and our extracurricular leadership programs integrate international experiences.

This international focus enriches the educational, social and cultural experiences of all of our students and enhances their intercultural competence.

“A major feature of Macquarie’s international program is our cotutelle agreements, which exist with 93 universities in 27 countries. Facilitating co-enrolment and co-supervision of doctoral students, the program greatly enhances international research collaboration between ourselves and leading research universities.

“Additionally, Macquarie is ranked among the top four Australian universities for international research collaboration,” Lee says, in reference to the SCImago Institutions Rankings 2010 World Report.
