Former Macquarie University Vice-Chancellor Professor Steven Schwartz has been recognised in the 2013 Australia Day honours list.

Professor Schwartz, Vice-Chancellor at Macquarie between 2006 and 2012, was named a member (AM) in the general division. His award recognises his service to tertiary education, to the community and to mental health.

During his time at Macquarie, the University's revenues doubled and a major investment was made in research staff and campus facilities, including a new hospital and clinic, library and hearing hub.

Professor Schwartz is currently undertaking a teaching fellowship at Oxford's Balliol College in the UK.
