Mathematics professor wins prestigious medal

Department of Mathematics Emeritus Professor Ross Street has been awarded the prestigious George Szekeres Medal by the Australian Mathematical Society.

The medal, awarded every two years, is given for an outstanding contribution to the mathematical sciences by an Australian mathematician.

Professor Street is a Professor of Mathematics and Director of the Centre of Australian Category Theory at Macquarie University. He is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science. His internationally renowned expertise lays in category theory, an area of modern mathematics that focuses on the structure of mathematics at their deepest level and which has ramifications in other scientific disciplines, notably computer science and mathematical physics.

On being awarded the medal, Professor Street joins a select group of truly eminent mathematicians whose works have made, and continue to make, an extraordinary impact in the field.

The University congratulates Professor Street for this richly deserved award.
