Program Description: This talk discusses how hypnosis can be used to investigate delusional beliefs. You'll get a brief introduction to hypnosis, and then learn how hypnotic suggestions can re-create unusual beliefs, including cases where beliefs are transmitted from one individual to another.

About the Co-ordinator: Dr Rochelle Cox is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence in Cognition and its Disorders in the Department of Cognitive Science. Her research involves developing hypnotic suggestions designed to model a range of delusional beliefs, such as the belief of seeing a stranger when you look in the mirror. She investigates how closely and usefully hypnosis can model these conditions.

Program Description: We will look at Macquarie as an urban development site, and look at how water is managed, from the perspectives of both people on campus, and the plants and animals whose lives are affected by how we shape and use urban spaces. Students will visit Mars Creek, and evaluate Macquarie's water management, exploring lessons for planning and management. Program Description: In this practical you'll learn about cognitive illusions – in particular, the so-called 'rubber hand illusion'. First, we will run an illusion demonstration and you'll be able to get an idea what it might be like to take part in cognitive science research both as participant and researcher. Then, we will discuss why this illusion might work and talk about recent research findings. The overall aim of this session is to give you some insight into how extremely useful illusions are for the study of human cognition and brain mechanisms.

About the Co-ordinator: We constantly interact with others and the world around us with our body. The major focus of Dr Regine Zopf's research has been to understand how our brains keep track of our own bodies and how this enables us to plan our next actions. Zopf studied Psychology and Neuroscience in Germany and completed a PhD degree in Cognitive Science at Macquarie University. Now, she is an Australian Research Council Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Perception in Action Research Group at Macquarie University.

About the Co-ordinator: Dr Tony Miller's research interests began with the application of electroanalytical procedures for the real-time measurement of dopamine transmission in animals. Currently he is conducting human research in the area of cognitive remediation. He has been a lecturer in the Department of Psychology at Macquarie University since 2009, and is responsible for teaching in areas of biological psychology, learning, motivation, research ethics and neuropsychology.

About the Co-ordinator: Vince Hurley is a lecture in criminology. Before taking up a career as an academic he spent 28 years as a NSW Police Officer. Some of his duties included investigating drug importations, he was a hostage negotiator and he worked uniformed duties (on the street) at Blacktown, Mount Druitt, Penrith and St Marys. His presentation will blend criminological theory and how it relates to the practical way in which the police do their job.

Program Description: Why do we dream? What do our dreams mean? Why are nightmares so scary? This lecture will explore what goes on inside our heads when we dream. It will look at different theories of dreaming such as Freud's 'The interpretation of dreams', research that links REM sleep with dreams, and current clinical neuroscientific research that suggests many different areas of the brain are important for dreaming.

About the Co-ordinator: Dr Simon Boag teaches personality and psychological theory. He has published more than 20 papers on topics covering personality theory, psychoanalysis and dreams, and has recently published a book titled 'Freudian repression, the unconscious, and the dynamics of inhibition'. He is currently conducting research in the areas of personality pathology, dream theory, philosophy of psychoanalysis and personality assessment.

About the Co-ordinator: Max is studying a Bachelor of Arts with Bachelor of Laws, majoring in German Studies. He is the president of the Macquarie University Law Society, and has done two exchanges while studying here at Macquarie – one in Germany and the other in Austria. Deen is a studying a Bachelor of Applied Finance with Bachelor of Economics at Macquarie. This course has taken him to India for practical experience and he's done an exchange in Colombia.
