Macquarie University startups and spinouts

Macquarie University has a strong record of innovation performance. See some examples below.

Modular Photonics – a spinout from Macquarie University – is a young, B2B company manufacturing glass-microchip devices that increase data transmission rates and reach in legacy public and enterprise multimode fibre networks.

Modular-photonics logo Our award winning plug-and-play products install in one hour, enabling 1 to 40G data rates at less than 75% of the cost to re-cable to single mode fibre.

Established in 2001 as a spinoff from Macquarie University, MicroBioGen is a world-leading biotechnology company with global success in the development of industrial yeast biocatalysts.

Microbiogen logo

MicroBioGen has developed a platform technology that enables us to upgrade the industrial capabilities of the world’s most utilised microorganism – Saccharomyces cerevisiae. This yeast underpins over US$1 trillion in products per year including biofuels, bread, wine, spirits, animal feed, biochemicals etc.

MicroBioGen is successfully partnered with the international biotech company Novozymes, and our yeast products – used for the Novozymes Innova series – are quickly becoming the global industry standard to produce a range of first-generation biofuels.

The Australian Federal Government awarded MicroBioGen with a $4 million grant through the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) to optimise a yeast for food and fuel production. MicroBioGen has won numerous awards, such as a Macquarie University Award for Commercial Innovation and an Australian Export Award.
