Getting Started
What is PACE?
PACE stands for Participation and Community Engagement. PACE is a key component of the University's strategic direction, emphasising the University's commitment to excellence in research, learning and teaching, and community engagement. PACE provides opportunities for students and staff to actively contribute to positive social change in communities, while developing valuable career skills. The aim of PACE is mutually beneficial learning and engagement.
What is a participation unit?
Participation units are the third pillar of the New Curriculum: People, Planet, and Participation. Participation units provide an academic framework through which students can:
- engage with the community
- apply the knowledge they have acquired in the classroom to real world situations
- learn through participation
- develop their own capabilities
- develop skills that employers value.
Participation units must meet the Participation Criteria as approved by Academic Senate.
Why should a student choose a participation unit?
Participation units provide students with the opportunity to engage in a range of experiential learning activities such as:
- internships
- work integrated learning
- practicums
- field trips with a partnership component
- community service and learning
- community development
How will a participation unit help a student's career?
Participation units provide students with the opportunity to actively contribute to more just, inclusive and sustainable societies through learning activities with communities: locally, in regional Australia and overseas. These learning activities are undertaken within a rigorous academic framework and enable students to develop skills and capabilities that employers value.
How much time will a participation unit involve?
The workload involved in a participation unit, like all other units, depends on its credit point value. Check the online handbook or ask the unit convenor, for details.
When does the actual participation activity take place?
This depends on the specific participation unit and the nature of the participation activity. Check with the unit convenor for more information.
Are participation units a requirement in every degree?
The structure of each degree program determines whether completion of a participation unit is a requirement. In some cases it will be a requirement; in other cases a participation unit will be an option; and in yet other cases, a participation unit may be selected as an elective. Eventually participation, alongside people and planet units, will be a required component of every undergraduate degree. Postgraduate students will not be required to complete a participation unit, but there will be a variety of opportunities available for those who wish to do so.
Can students do more than one Participation Unit?
Yes, if they have space to do so in their program of study.

Safety
What about safety during a participation activity?
The University takes the issue of safety very seriously. All partner organisations must be screened to ensure they meet strict requirements in terms of safety, OHS and capacity to host a student. An onsite visit might be conducted if there are any safety concerns.

Examples of participation activities that are likely to meet the criteria include: work integrated learning including internships; community based research; field trips and practicums with a partnership component; service learning; and community development projects.
What are the components of a participation unit?
A participation unit should have the following components:

- Experiential component that satisfies the minimum hours for participation (at least 30 hours for a 3cp unit and 60 hours for a 6cp unit)
- Scaffolding for skill and knowledge development, including assessment tasks
- Wrap up, including debrief and reflection.
Please refer to the Senate-approved Participation Criteria for more information on these components.
Who decides whether a unit meets the criteria?
Ultimately Senate. Convenors of units wishing to apply for participation accreditation will need to complete the Participation Unit Nomination Form and submit it through their Head of Department to the relevant Faculty Standards and Quality Committee (FSQC).
