One of Australasia's best philosophy departments
You'll explore the fundamental questions of existence — both present and future — when you study Philosophy at Macquarie.
We offer two majors: one in Philosophy and another in Applied Ethics. Our offerings reflect a commitment to traditional philosophical pluralism, with long-standing strengths in metaphysics, ethics, social philosophy, philosophy of science, and philosophy of the mind.
Through strong cross-disciplinary collaborations, our academics explore the issues that lie at the intersection of law, culture, psychology and neuroscience, biology, medicine, AI and computing, and ethics.
Inclusion statement
We acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the land on which Macquarie University stands – the Wallumattagal Clan of the Dharug Nation – whose cultures and customs have nurtured, and continue to nurture, this land since time immemorial. We pay our respects to the Elders, past and present.
As a Department, we are committed to fostering an inclusive environment, informed by and respectful of diverse traditions, customs, and knowledges, in which every individual feels valued, respected, and empowered to share their unique perspectives. To this end, we have implemented programmes such as the Women in Philosophy mentoring group and Minorities and Philosophy (MAP).
