These enable PhD students and recent PhD graduates to travel and pursue research opportunities in various fields.

Sir Asher Joel 2012 Scholarship
Description:
For study in Israel in the areas of Biblical Hebrew, Early Judaism and the Archaeology of Ancient Israel. Note that, for the 2012 award, preference may be given to those attending the Tel Azekah excavation.
Eligibility:
Available to Macquarie University Ancient History postgraduates by coursework or research, or to recent Ancient History postdoctoral scholars based at Macquarie and within three years of submission of thesis.
Purpose:
To facilitate specific publication outcomes and/or to enhance Macquarie University's reputation in the field of the study of Ancient Israel.
Value:
- A$1,500 contribution towards airfare
- A$500 per week for a maximum of 6 weeks (towards the cost of accommodation)
(HDR candidates may be able to supplement this through the usual Department/Faculty funding and PGRF.)
Time frame:
The successful candidate will be eligible to travel to Israel from July 2012 to February 2013.
Applications and Selection Criteria:
Candidates should make their application on the form provided here. A decision to award will be made on the basis of the selection criteria contain therein. They are:
- The applicant's curriculum vitae including a full list of awards, prizes, and peer-review activity (a2 of application);
- The significance of the proposed project (b2 of application);
- The feasibility of achieving the project's stated outcomes and/or the contribution the project will make in facilitating links between Macquarie and Israeli institutions (c1 of application); and
- The importance of the scholarship in enhancing the applicant's research (c2 of application).
The applicant will also need to provide a budget showing how the money will be spent and, crucially, how the balance (if any) will be funded (c3 of application)

The Macquarie Gale Roman Scholarship 2012
Description:
Thanks to the generosity of the late Dr Bill Gale and Mrs Janet Gale, the Ancient History Department of Macquarie University is offering a scholarship to the British School at Rome for up to nine months starting from October 2012.
Eligibility:
Available to PhD candidates in Ancient History at Macquarie University, or to recent Ancient History postdoctoral scholars based at Macquarie University and within three years of submission of their thesis.
Purpose:
To further the study of aspects of Roman history through interaction with the resources and community of the British School at Rome.
Value:
- 1 return economy airfare from Australia to Rome
- Cost of subsistence in Rome (residence in the British School is obligatory).
Time frame:
The successful candidate will be eligible to stay in Rome for up to nine months commencing October 2012.
Applications:
The applicant, whilst at the BSR, will undertake a research project relevant to the history and archaeology of Rome, Italy or the provinces of the Roman Empire. He/she should address the selection criteria listed below.
Selection criteria:
The award of the Gale Scholarship will be determined by the following criteria:
- The applicant's curriculum vitae including a full list of awards, prizes, and peer-review activity (a2 of application);
- The significance of the proposed project (b2 of application);
- The feasibility of achieving the project's stated outcomes (c1 of application);
- The importance of the scholarship in enhancing the project and the applicant's research more generally (c2 of application); and
- The contribution that awarding of the scholarship will make in facilitating links between Macquarie and BSR (c3 of application).

Gale Graeco-Roman Travelling Fellowship 2012
Description:
Thanks to the generosity of the late Dr Bill Gale and Mrs Janet Gale, the Ancient History Department of Macquarie University is offering an award to Macquarie University HDR students and recent graduates to travel overseas in order to pursue a program of research in Graeco-Roman history.
Eligibility:
Available to Macquarie University Ancient History postgraduates, or to recent Ancient History postdoctoral scholars based at Macquarie University and within three years of submission of their thesis.
Purpose:
To facilitate specific research and publication outcomes in the field of Graeco-Roman History through accessing international resources.
Value:
- A$5,000 to contribute towards:
- airfare
- accommodation
(HDR candidates may be able to supplement this through the usual Department/Faculty funding and PGRF.)
Time frame:
The successful candidate will be eligible to travel between June 2012 and February 2013.

The Macquarie/Tyndale Travelling Scholarship
Description:
Through the generosity of Tyndale House (Cambridge) and a donor from the Society for the Study of Early Christianity (SSEC), the Ancient History Department of Macquarie University is offering a travelling scholarship for four weeks to Tyndale House, Cambridge in January/February 2013.
Eligibility:
Available to members of the Society for the Study of Early Christianity (SSEC) who are also enrolled as Macquarie postgraduate candidates (HDR or coursework) and Macquarie Masters or PhD graduates of no more than three years' standing.
Purpose:
The successful candidate will be expected to benefit from and contribute to the international community of scholars at Tyndale House in line with the ethos and expectations of that organisation (please consult the Tyndale House website at http://www.tyndale.cam.ac.uk)
Value:
- A$1,500 towards airfare to London
- Four weeks' accommodation and use of the Library at Tyndale House
Time frame:
The successful candidate will be eligible to stay at Tyndale House for four weeks over January/February 2013.

- proposed project
- specific refereed publication outcomes
- a statement of how the project will benefit from and contribute to the study of the Old or New Testament background and/or Early Christianity at Tyndale House

ACANS Junior Research Fellowship
This fellowship is available to students who have obtained a BA in ancient history, archaeology or classical languages. It is expected that the fellowship will be held while the candidate is enrolled for a higher degree.
The fellowship is intended to assist students learn about numismatics with a view to developing wider research strategies. Students who obtain the fellowships will be asked to participate in a seminar series on numismatics given by the director of ACANS, to undertake a numismatic research project (the results of which will be presented in a seminar), and to assist in the work of ACANS. At the end students will submit a brief report on their activities to the director.
Fellowship value: approx. A$5,200.
